Microsoft has instructed its employees to stop using Claude Code and instead transition to GitHub Copilot. The company had first started giving access to Claude Code to employees in December last year.

I understand that Microsoft is planning to remove most of its Claude Code licenses and push many of its developers to use Copilot CLI instead. While Claude Code has been a popular addition, it has also undermined Microsoft’s new GitHub Copilot CLI coding tool — a command line version of GitHub Copilot that runs outside of development apps like Visual Studio Code.

Anthropic’s products—especially Claude Code, its tool for agentic software development—have seen runaway popularity. “We tried to plan very well for a world of 10x growth per year,” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on stage at the conference. “And yet we saw 80x, and so that is the reason we have had difficulties with compute.”
